Drs. Roger and Connie Hill were recognized as recipients of the Dr. Willie C. Young Serving the Mission Volunteer Award at this year’s St. Bernards Medical Group Health & Fitness Expo.

The award is given to individuals who give selflessly of their time to make this community a better place to live. This marked the first time the award went to two people.

The Hills have played pivotal roles in ensuring that residents of this region receive the very best in heartcare services. Roger is a cardiologist who moved to Jonesboro after earning a medical degree from the University of Tennessee in Memphis and completing advanced training in cardiovascular disease. He came here early in the development of the St. Bernards heartcare program and, in fact, performed some of the very first cardiac interventions in Northeast Arkansas.

Connie is a clinical nurse by training who now serves as vice president of heartcare and cancer care services for St. Bernards. She holds bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in nursing as well as a master of business administration degree. And she worked extensively with her husband in clinical practice before accepting responsibilities with St. Bernards.

Together the husband-wife team is committed to caring for patients and to giving back both at home and through international medical missions programs.

The Hills are among the hardest working Expo volunteers – and have been since the medical group introduced the Health & Fitness Expo 10 years ago. They are on site just about every minute the Expo doors are open to the public. During much of the time on Saturday, they are at the Heart & Vascular booth, talking with Expo visitors who have heart health questions or taking part in physician-led panel discussions.

On Sunday they help provide Pre-Participation Evaluations for Craighead County students who take part in school athletics.

The Serving the Mission Volunteer Award is named for the late Dr. Willie C. Young, a visionary who encouraged the creation of the medical group’s Health & Fitness Expo as a way to get information directly to the public about all the health and fitness services available in this region.  The award was presented by Rosie Young, widow of the founding partner of Otolaryngology and Facial Surgery Centre for whom the award is named, and Dr. Devi G. Nair, director of electrophysiology services at St. Bernards and physician chair of the Expo.

Donations in honor of the Hills are being made to Jonesboro Hispanic Services Inc. and to the St. Bernards Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
